Services

The first time you look at the Services window, you may feel that you're getting deeper into geekdom than you ever wanted to go. But calm down--it's really not that difficult.

To enter Services in Vista or Windows 7, click Start, type services, and press Enter.

In XP, select Start, choose Run, type services.msc, and press Enter.

The window that comes up can seem intimidating. It lists a great many services (nearly 200 on my PC) that various programs need to help them do their job. The problem is that some of the services that are running in the background could just as well be sleeping.

Double-click a service and up comes its Properties dialog box. One option on the General tab, 'Startup type', controls how the service starts. Select Automatic, and it loads when Windows boots. SelectManual, and it loads when a program needs it. Select Disabled, and it won't load at all.

Tablet PC Extras, Part 2: Vista, Windows 7

Turn off Tablet PC extras, part 2.I've already discussed why you should or should not turn this set of features off, and I've described how to do the first part of the job. Now comes the second part. In Services, find and double-click the Tablet PC Input Service. In the 'Startup type' drop-down menu, select Disabled, and then click OK.

ReadyBoost: Vista

In theory, plugging a flash drive into your PC and letting ReadyBoost take control of it will speed up your PC. I have my doubts.

But if you aren't using ReadyBoost to speed up Windows, the feature is slowing it down. In that case, you'll be happier turning ReadyBoost off entirely.

In Services, find and double-click ReadyBoost. In the 'Startup type' drop-down menu, select Disabled, and then click OK.

XP doesn't have ReadyBoost, and Windows 7 doesn't allow you to turn it off.

Search Indexing: XP, Vista, Windows 7

Indexing speeds up Windows' searches considerably, especially in Vista and Windows 7: An indexed search can take seconds, while a nonindexed search can take minutes. But when you're not searching, indexing drags down performance.

If you almost never search for files, or if you use a third-party search tool like Copernic Desktop orGoogle Desktop, consider turning off search indexing. Otherwise, leave it on.

The service you want to turn off is called Windows Search in Vista and Windows 7, and Indexing Service in XP. To turn it off, select Disabled.

Error Reporting: Vista, Windows 7

I've already discussed how to do disable this feature in XP. To switch it off in Vista or Windows 7, you'll need to disable it in a different location.

Windows reports errors back to Microsoft, in order to gain information for later bug fixes. The trouble is that this reporting operation slows down your PC at the moment when you're most annoyed by it.

If you'd rather speed up your PC than help Microsoft debug software that it has already sold to you, find and double-click the Windows Error Reporting Service. In the 'Startup type' drop-down menu, select Disabled.

Fast User Switching: XP

No, I'm not suggesting that anyone switch you with a faster user.

This service helps Windows keep two or more users logged on and active at a time. That's useful and convenient...provided you're sharing the PC with another person.

If the PC is all yours, find and double-click the Fast User Switching Compatibility service, and set the Startup type to Disabled.

Help and Support: XP

You shouldn't turn this one off entirely. After all, if you need help for an XP component, the last thing you want is to get an error message instead.

But unless you constantly use Help, you won't want it to be running until you need it. So in Services, find and double-click Help and Support, and select the Startup type Manual. That way, Help and Support won't load until you ask for it.

Offline Files: Vista and Windows 7 (Business and Ultimate Editions Only)

If you work on files stored on a server whose availability you can't depend on, Offline Files makes your life easier by copying the files to your hard drive and keeping them synced.

But if you don't work on such files, there's no point in keeping the feature activated. Find and double-click the service Offline Files. In the 'Startup type' drop-down menu, select Disabled, and then click OK.

This feature isn't available in any of the Home editions of Vista or Windows 7.

The Desktop

The features that you can disable here are the easiest ones to turn off--and switching them off is likely to yield the biggest improvements in performance, too.

Aero: Vista, Windows 7

Turn off Aero in Vista, step 1.With Vista, Microsoft gave Windows an attractive, transparent look that it dubbed Aero. With Aero on, the headers at the top of each window are slightly transparent. You can't see what's behind them clearly enough to read them, but it gives the desktop a nice, three-dimensional look.

But that look eats clock cycles, and depending on the speed of your PC and your willingness to trade performance for aesthetics, you might want to turn Aero off.

Turn off Aero in Vista, step 2.If you're using Vista, right-click the Windows desktop and select Personalize,Window Color and Appearance. Click the Open classic appearance properties for more color options link (if you don't see the link, Aero is already off).

Turn off Aero in Windows 7.In Windows 7, right-click the Windows desktop and select Personalize. Select one of the themes that are displayed under the 'Basic and High Contrast Themes' heading.

The Sidebar: Vista

That bar full of widgets on the right side of the Vista desktop must have seemed like a good idea at the time. Who wouldn't want a feature that distracts you when you need to concentrate, steals precious screen space, and slows system performance like an anvil chained to a swimmer's leg?

Someone must have complained, because Microsoft didn't include the Sidebar in Windows 7.

Unlike the other features in this article, this one has no possible redeeming value. I'm not suggesting that you consider turning this feature off; I'm urging you to turn it off without further consideration.

To remove the Sidebar, Right-click a blank space on the Sidebar and select Properties. Uncheck Start Sidebar when Windows starts.

Speed Up Windows by Stripping It Down

Windows can do all sorts of amazing things, some of which you might actually want it to do. Unfortunately, the things you don't want it to do can slow it down. By turning off unnecessary programs, processes, and services, you can unburden Windows and help it live up to its full potential.

Some of the following suggestions may not produce a noticeable improvement in performance individually. But their cumulative effect can be to speed up your system significantly.

You don't have to turn off all of these features, mind you. Most of them are useful--or at least aesthetically pleasing--to some people, but pointless to others. I've tried to provide enough information to enable you to make an informed decision about which ones to keep.

To help you follow my suggestions more easily, I've organized the questionable features in my list by the Windows location where you must go to turn them off. That way, you won't have to visit the Windows Features dialog box, or Services, more than once.

The System Properties Dialog Box
You can turn off many features from the System Properties dialog box.You've almost certainly been here before. This is where you change your network ID, manage System Restore, and launch Device Manager. You can also shut off some unnecessary features here.

To get to the System Properties dialog box in Vista or Windows 7, click Start, right-click Computer, and select Properties. Then click one of three links--Remote settings, System protection, or Advanced system settings--in the left pane.

Alternatively, click Start, type sysdm.cpl, and press Enter.

In XP, click Start, right-click My Computer, and select Properties. Or click Start, Run, type sysdm.cpl, and press Enter.

Unnecessary Cosmetic Features: XP, Vista, Windows 7

Windows doesn't have to look as pretty as it does to do its job. And some aesthetic compromises can free up precious processor clock cycles for real work.

To see your options for turning off these extras, click the System Properties dialog box's Advanced tab, and then click the Settings button inside the Performance box.

This brings up another dialog box, where you can select which visual effects to keep and which to lose. Select Adjust for best performance to turn off all of them, or individually uncheck the ones you don't care for.

Error Reporting: Windows XP

Turn off Error Reporting to speed up XP a bit.You've probably noticed that both Windows and the programs that run on it occasionally make mistakes. When that happens, the operating system attempts to send a report back to Microsoft. In theory, your report helps the company find bugs and improve future versions.

Whether that reporting system really helps is open to debate. It certainly doesn't help you in the short run.

If you'd rather get on with your work after something goes wrong, you can disable error reporting. To do so in XP, click the System Properties dialog box's Advanced tab, click the Error Reporting button in the lower-right corner, and select Disable error reporting. I recommend keeping 'But notify me when critical errors occur' checked.

You can also turn off error reporting in Vista and Windows 7, but not from this dialog box. I explain how to proceed in the Services section.

Remote Assistance: XP, Vista, Windows 7

If you're not providing or receiving long-distance support, or if you use a third-party tool to provide that support, there's no reason to leave the Remote Assistance feature on.

To turn it off, click the System Properties dialog box's Remote tab. Uncheck Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer (in Vista or Windows 7) or Allow Remote Assistance invitations to be sent from this computer (in XP).

Windows Features Dialog Box
This handy box, semi-hidden in Vista and Windows 7, gives you on/off control over a multitude of features. You can control what games are available, turn on RIP Listener (which isn't nearly as macabre as it sounds), and turn off some resource-wasting services.

XP users can skip this section, entirely--this dialog box was added with Vista.

To open the Windows Features dialog box, click Start, type programs and features, and press Enter. Once the 'Uninstall or change a program' application comes up, click Turn Windows features on or off in the left pane.

Windows 7 users can take a quicker alternative route: Click Start, type windows features, and select Turn Windows features on or off.

One warning: This dialog box takes a long time to load; and when you're done with it and click OK, it takes an even longer time to close. Then it usually reboots the PC. Consequently it's best to make all of these changes at one time.

Internet Printing Client: Vista, Windows 7

Don't use Internet Printing? Turn it off.Do you ever print documents over the Internet? If not, you're unlikely to miss Windows' Internet Printing Client. To turn it off, first find and expand the Windows Features dialog box's Print Services (or Print and Document Services) listing. Then uncheck Internet Printing Client.

Windows Meeting Space: Vista

If you're working on collaborative projects with other Vista users, Meeting Space is a handy program to have around. It lets you share files across a network while editing them with a remote colleague. A lot of people were disappointed with Microsoft dropped Meeting Space from Windows 7.

But, if you're not working on collaborative projects with other Vista users, Meeting Space is just a waste of resources. To disable it, simply uncheck Windows Meeting Space in the Windows Features dialog box.

Tablet PC Extras, Part 1: Vista, Windows 7

Turn off Tablet PC extras, part 1.In the long-ago days before the iPad, a tablet PC was a laptop with a touchscreen that could rotate 180 degrees and fold down over the keyboard. With those rather bulky and heavy tablets in mind, Windows offers some very good tools for touchscreen interfaces.

I'm actually writing this article on such a computer, and though I seldom fold it down into tablet mode, I wouldn't dream of turning off those enhancements. However, if your computer lacks a touchscreen, you have no reason to leave them on.

This is a two-step process that starts in the Windows Features dialog box. Start by unchecking Tablet PC Optional Components (Vista) or Tablet PC Components (Windows 7).

Nintendo 3DS Takes No-Glasses 3D Mainstream

Let's get a few things out of the way: Yes, the Nintendo 3DS's splashy glasses-free 3D is impressive. No, it won't make you cross-eyed or blind. Yes, the 3D effect you've heard so much about creates clever and often fascinating gameplay. No, the preloaded games and apps and snazzy new features aren't slam dunks. Yes, Nintendo once again built a piece of gaming gear that takes big risks, though while some pay off, others remain unproven. And yes, for the $250 Nintendo's asking, you'll probably want to buy one if you're a steadfast Nintendo fan.

But only probably. If Avatar 3D wasn't your thing, if you couldn't care less about stereoscopic 3D, if you'd rather not fiddle with fussy menus or social networking apps or 3D pictures you can snap and share with friends, the 3DS probably isn't for you. Let's get this straight, too: The 3DS may be less a gaming handheld than a totable multimedia center, only one of whose activities happens to be gaming.

Honey, You Look Fat in Those Clothes

Nintendo opted to load the 3DS with all you need to get started, plus a few unexpected extras. From a box twice the size of the DSi's, you'll pull an AC adapter, the manual and setup instructions, a drop-in-place charge cradle, a pack of "augmented reality" cards (more on these later), and the 3DS itself, which includes both a telescoping stylus and pre-installed 2GB SD storage card.

Your first look at the system may feel anticlimactic. The design team traded the flush edging of prior models for an oddly edge-beveled, slightly oversized top lid built to accommodate the dual away-facing cameras (used to capture 3D images) as well as the larger, more advanced autostereoscopic screen.

But place the 3DS next to the DSi and you'll discover it's actually significantly smaller. Where the DSi weighs 11 ounces, the 3DS clocks in at a trifling 8.1 ounces--just 0.4 ounces heavier than the family's slimmest member, the DS Lite (though still nearly 3.5 ounces heavier than Apple's glass-and-metal iPhone 4). Holding it for hours at a time feels effortless, and my only complaint reviewing the "Cosmo Black" model is about the glossy finish's tendency to smear (the alternative "Aqua Blue" version seems a less messy bet).

Finding the stylus initially takes a few extra seconds, because it's no longer stashed at right or left and instead plucked from the system's top spine. The new telescoping metal material used in the stylus offers at least an inch and a half of adjustable length, allowing you the option to downsize for smaller hands.

On the left spine you'll find the SD card slot (for games and data storage) and a sliding volume control--a welcome improvement from the DSi's irritating rocker switch. On the right spine rests a sliding switch for turning wireless access on and off. It shifts back automatically, making it unlikely you'll accidentally bump it and shut down your connection.

The top spine includes the standard left and right bumper control buttons, an infrared port, a power adapter connection, and the open-air game cartridge slot. I suppose the lack of defective DS systems over the years vindicates Nintendo's preference to leave these slots unprotected.

Flip the 3DS open and you might mistake it for a DSi. Both units have relatively spacious dual screens, stereo speakers, a d-pad and four diamond-pattern buttons, power, start, and select buttons, and a single facing-toward-you camera. The 3DS adds a thumb-joystick for analog 3D game control, positioned just above the digital d-pad and flush with the system frame. It's similar to Sony's PSP thumb-stick, but larger and more comfortable over extended play periods. Nintendo also shifted the START and SELECT buttons to just below the bottom screen, and dropped in a 3D slider, top right, that lets you change the visual depth of 3D images or disable the effect entirely.

Look Ma, No Glasses!

Of course the 3DS's top screen--where it works its 3D magic by feeding separate images to each of your eyes--couldn't be less like the DSi's in terms of capability. Where the DSi employed a 3.25-inch TFT LCD, the 3DS lops a bit off the top and extends the edges, giving its slightly larger 3.53-inch autostereoscopic LCD more of a widescreen feel (it's technically 5:3 aspect ratio, or 15:9, instead of the more conventional 16:9). It's also capable of producing much sharper images with 800 x 240 pixels, or 400 x 240 pixels sent to each eye in 3D mode. Prior DS screens only supported 256 x 192 pixels.

What the top screen gains in tenths of an inch, the bottom 4:3 aspect ratio touchscreen loses, shrinking from 3.25 to just 3.02 inches diagonally, though it renders at a slightly higher 320 x 240 pixels. In fact it's just enough to yield discernibly sharper text and cleaner lines, especially tapping around the 3DS's new and abundant menus.

Getting the 3D effect to work properly--and continue working--takes some getting used to, and requires you and the 3DS remain relatively still. For instance, you're asked to position your face away from the top screen slightly more than a foot, or about normal viewing distance, then remain perfectly centered at all times. But shifting as little as 10 degrees in any direction spoils the 3D effect and causes images on the screen to double or blur. It's not a problem for games that don't use the system's motion-sensing features, but it's a deal-breaker for others that require you to tilt and jostle the entire unit. If you don't keep your line of vision fixed perpendicular to the screen, you slip out of the "sweet spot" and the image gets garbled.

You'll also find yourself adjusting to the effect each time you look away from, then back at the screen. Expect to suffer mild eye strain going in. After interviewing an optometric expert about the 3DS, I'm pretty sure time and repetition will eventually train my eyes to make the shift more efficiently and eliminate the straining sensation, but it definitely takes some getting used to.

Nintendo's taking no chances, of course, and includes "Health and Safety Information" warnings that caution against children under six viewing 3D images due to "vision damage" risks. Not to worry, Mom or Dad, the 3DS's parental controls allow you to restrict access to the system in dozens of ways, from setting game access by software rating to curbing online interaction to regulating friend registration. And yes, you can disable the system's ability to display 3D images.

It Only Does Almost Everything

The system comes flush with preinstalled apps, including a clever-sounding albeit slightly daft little game called Face Raiders. The game starts by snapping a picture of your face, mapping it onto flying objects, then pits you against dozens of clones (what would your therapist say?). The game even uses the system's 3D cameras to convince you they're attacking from all sides. Trouble is, you have to jerk the system around quickly to effectively counter, repeatedly pulling your head out of true with the screen and spoiling the 3D effect. (I'm told swivel chairs help.)

More impressive--though occasionally impaired by the same field-of-view issues--the 3DS can read "augmented reality" cards that use the 3DS's camera to transform ordinary objects around you (in the real world) into virtual thingamabobs you can fiddle with, or defend yourself from (yep, some even attack you). Imagine pointing your camera at a chair, then watching a garden suddenly bloom from the seat surface. Or a bunch of archery targets that you can only hit by getting up and moving the 3DS around (in real space) to find the perfect angle. Kind of eerie the first time you try it, but also pretty darned cool.

Want to make a Mii? You can (actually, you have to) but using the 3DS's VGA cameras to snap your face and come up with an approximation tends to produce avatars that look like strangers. I guess that's what you get from a 0.3-megapixel camera--the same subpar resolution as the DSi's shooter.

The new Home menu button serves as the handheld's "get out of anything" option, suspending apps or games and giving you quick access to other system functions. The home page it conjures includes an option to squeeze your apps onto one page (no more scrolling left and right), and the 3DS's higher fidelity screens keep everything looking sharp and tidy. From here you can launch Game Notes (to scribble bits of info), the Friend List (see what your friends are up to), Download Play (download 3DS or DS games), a 3DS Sound app (record sounds and lightly fiddle with them), or an Internet browser (though the browser isn't yet working--Nintendo says it will be shortly via a system update).

Even the 3DS's menus offer the occasional thrill, such as when you're first asked to engage the 3D effect during setup. The 3DS lets you know it's about to happen with a suspenseful countdown. Then the screen suddenly seems deeper and the "Nintendo 3DS" logo disengages from its static perch, floating out of then back into the screen.

The system still exhibits signs of a work in progress. Some of its features like the Friend List and 3DS Sound app feel underdeveloped and over-simplistic, while others like Face Raiders and the "augmented reality" card games too often spotlight the field-of-view issue in 3D mode. We weren't able to test features like StreetPass (wirelessly exchange data with other nearby 3DS users) and SpotPass (hop onto wireless hotspots to download software and videos), both of which sound promising, but there's definitely a sense Nintendo's still figuring things out.

That said, there's never been a handheld quite like the 3DS--one as brimming with features as well as potential, and offering an experience that's frankly impossible on other mobile devices like Apple's iPhone 4 or Sony's upcoming PSP successor. If you want the next big idea from Nintendo, this is it.

The virus creator was a hacker named Masato Nakatsuji. He has repeatedly been arrested but never cured. Nakatsuji says it will keep repeating his actions just to see how many computer programs that successfully detects and removes viruses were homemade.
